Accordion Patented

May 23, 1829

Cyrill Demian is granted the patent for a new instrument, the accordion, which Demian describes as “automatically coupled chords.” The popularity of the accordion will quickly grow throughout continental Europe, following the polka craze of the 1840s, and eventually achieve its place as a centerpiece to various forms of folk music in Europe, North America and South America.
