Former science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard publishes Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health. In Dianetics, Hubbard postulates that the human mind is made up of two parts: the conscious “analytical mind” and the subconscious “reactive mind.” The analytic mind records data and memories from daily life and stores it as “mental image pictures,” much like a video camera. However, negative and painful mental image pictures are stored in the reactive mind. These negative mental image pictures, called “engrams,” are responsible for all human suffering and prevent people from achieving their true potential. Someone achieves their true potential by getting “clear” with help from a trained “auditor.”
