The First Checker Taxi
June 18, 1923
The first checker taxicab begins operations. Formed in 1922, the Checker Motors Corporation designed, produced and operated its line of taxicabs up until January 2009 when it declared bankruptcy. The Checker taxi and especially the final version, the yellow A8/Marathon, remains the emblem of American taxis. Beginning with the original A1, a two-cylinder automobile, all Checker cabs featured the recognizable checker stripe across the side. In 1929, Checker bought out its only rival Yellow Cab Company and adopted the yellow paint color for its cabs, leading to the iconic visual of the yellow taxi cab with a checkered racing stripe. For more information, see Checker Taxis.
