Nintendo Is Founded

September 23, 1889

Nintendo Koppai is founded by Fusajiro Yamauchi to produce and market handmade playing cards in Kyoto, Japan. In recognition of its card-playing roots, the name “Nintendo” means “leave luck to heaven.”

By 1963, the company has tried several small niche businesses, such as a cab company and a “love hotel.” In the 1980s, Nintendo is developed into a video game company with a market value of over US$85 billion, becoming one of the most influential in the industry and Japan’s third most valuable listed company.
